Dear Parents,
During the first nine weeks our spelling curriculum has focused on beginning and ending consonant sounds. We will continue to work on beginning and ending consonant sounds as we introduce many new things.
The spelling curriculum for the second, third, and fourth nine weeks will begin focusing on long and short vowels, blends, and digraphs. You will find a list of the spelling words on the first grade webpage that your child will be studying. At the beginning of each week review the word list with your child. Help your child learn to spell each word orally and in written form. Be sure that your child understands the meaning of each word and can use it in a complete sentence.
The words will be read aloud to the class, and the children will be expected to write the word correctly. Each test will include two dictation sentences. Each sentence should begin with a capital letter, end with the correct punctuation mark, be written in the correct word order, and be spelled correctly. If the children do not attend school on Friday the spelling test will be given on Thursday.
Make up tests will NOT be given!!!
Please keep the spelling list in a safe place such as posted on the refrigerator (or you can always refer back to this page). Thank you for your cooperation. I want spelling to be a positive experience for you and your child. PLEASE put your list in a very safe place. It is very beneficial to children to study their spelling words every night for a few minutes. As a parent I would mix up the words and give my child a test every night. If they miss any words have then write them and say them several times.
In class:
MONDAY: We write our spelling words 2 times each and our sentences 2 times each. Your child will bring home spelling words every Monday if we are having a test on Thursday or Friday of that week. Build spelling words with tiles.
TUESDAY:
WEDNESDAY: Visual memory OR write each spelling word in a sentence. Use capital letters, periods, and question marks. Remember to space.
THURSDAY: Spelling--study for test
FRIDAY: SPELLING TEST!!!
SPELLING RULES
LOOK AT THE WORD.
SAY THE WORD.
THINK ABOUT THE WORD.
WRITE THE WORD.
CHECK THE SPELLING.
When you are studying, mix the words and sentences up. They will not be called out in the order in which they are listed.
SINCERELY,
Beverly Westlake
