This month we will be learning about John Chapman…also known as Johnny Appleseed. Play games with your child and see if they can tell you the beginning or ending sound of the word that you say. Also, have your child make up “it” words. (bit—hit—sit etc.) We are learning about the weather. Please stress to your child how important it is to work neatly and finish all of their work each day. They also need to remember to write their name on every paper. Great work habits are formed early in life.

We have had an AWESOME beginning to the school year. I feel so blessed to be your child’s teacher this year. Your children are PRECIOUS!!! PLEASE remember if you come inside the building for ANY reason you MUST stop by the office and get a visitors pass. You MUST always bring your child in the front door. This is for the safety and security of our children!
We will be learning rules and procedures for the next few weeks. This will really help us have more instruction time in the future.
PLEASE read your first grade handbook and fill out all of the colored pages and send them to school as soon as possible. I need to make a parent distribution list. I try to send reminder emails as needed. Thank you for all of your support. I really appreciate it.

My name is Beverly Westlake. I am so very excited that I will get to be your first grade teacher this year!!! I have a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I also have a Master’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This will be my 30th year at Fulbright and I have LOVED every minute of it!!! I am looking forward to a very exciting year!!!
Our classroom is room number 12 and it is known as “The Crayola Room”. It is the very last room downstairs in the building. Everything in our room is bright and colorful including YOU!!! I can’t wait to meet each and every one of you!!! PLEASE bring your smile with you!!!
We will be having fun every day on a new learning adventure. - AR- Some of the children have started taking AR tests. Many others are working toward this goal and will get to go next time.
- The BEST way to improve reading and writing: PLEASE take 5 vocabulary words each night from the Dolch list that I sent home. Have your child think of a sentence with that word in it. Have your child write the sentence spelling the words as they hear the sound. Have them check for punctuation. Last, have them read their sentence out loud to you. Have your child read EVERY night out loud to an adult for at least 20 minutes. If you are CONSISTENT you will see GREAT result in 3 to 4 weeks!!!
- Conferences- Please be on time for your conference. We will be on a very tight schedule. I can NOT have conferences during instructional time. Thank you in advance for attending the conference. I like when we all work together for “OUR” child. It makes so much difference in their life. THANKS!!!!!!

In addition to the homework sheet that comes home every night your child should be reading out loud to a grownup for at least 30 minutes. They need to be sounding out words and looking at the pictures to try to figure out the words they do not know. Do not tell them the words. Make them sound them out.
Every Friday is spirit day. Please let your child wear their Fulbright shirt to school to show their “Falcon Pride!!!” If you are new to Fulbright and do not have a shirt the order forms should be coming home soon. Also, your child will be given a Fulbright shirt to keep for the FUN RUN.
If your child is going home a different way and you email me about it and DO NOT get a reply from me you will need to call the office and tell them how your child is to go home.
READING: PLEASE have your child do Lexia or Reflx math for 30 minutes every night!

This month we will be learning about John Chapman…also known as Johnny Appleseed. Play games with your child and see if they can tell you the beginning or ending sound of the word that you say. Also, have your child make up “it” words. (bit—hit—sit etc.) We are learning about the weather. Please stress to your child how important it is to work neatly and finish all of their work each day. They also need to remember to write their name on every paper. Great work habits are formed early in life.

Lesson #1
We have had an AWESOME beginning to the school year. I feel so blessed to be your child’s teacher this year. Your children are PRECIOUS!!! PLEASE remember if you come inside the building for ANY reason you MUST stop by the office and get a visitors pass. You MUST always bring your child in the front door. This is for the safety and security of our children!
We will be learning rules and procedures for the next few weeks. This will really help us have more instruction time in the future.
PLEASE read your first grade handbook and fill out all of the colored pages and send them to school as soon as possible. I need to make a parent distribution list. I try to send reminder emails as needed. Thank you for all of your support. I really appreciate it.

- TESTING WEEK: Please have your child to school on time. If they come in late they will not be able to do the test with me. . I think they will do better if I give them the test since they are used to me and my voice.
- PLEASE make sure that they have something in their stomach. Hungry children do not do very well on tests. PLEASE send them to school in a HAPPY mood! We will all do our very BEST!
- We need 25 juice boxes per day of testing. We also need 25 individually wrapped snacks for each day…NO PEANUT PRODUCTS… ROOM MOMS PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THE SNACK SCHEDULE FOR ME…THANKS!
- TESTING WEEK… I will bring them in early so that they can go to the restroom before we begin testing. PLEASE make sure your child goes to bed NO LATER than 7:30 -8:00 each night.

We still need Clorox wipes and #2 pencils. We are trying to clean our room more often to keep everyone well.

This week is a review week and we will be re-reading stories and reviewing skills in literacy and math. There will not be a spelling test this week.
Please check with your child and make sure they have scissors, glue, J” tablets, and crayons. They do not need to be borrowing from other students.
Please make sure your child does their homework first every night. The second thing your child should do would be reading out loud to you for at least 30 minutes every night. They need to be writing at least five sentences with their vocabulary words every night and studying their spelling words.
We still need yellow #2 pencils and treasures for the treasure chest!!!

- October 7th-Pumpkin Patch field trip-parents must meet us there or follow the bus in their own cars. Please have your child wear long jeans and their Fulbright shirt if they have one. Your child needs to bring a lunch and a drink in a SACK!!! Please do not send anything that we have to carry around or bring back to school. EVERYTHING will be thrown away at the Pumpkin Patch. This is a busy place and we cannot keep up with things.
- AR- Some of the children have started taking AR tests. Many others are working toward this goal and will get to go next time.
- The BEST way to improve reading and writing: PLEASE take 5 vocabulary words each night from the Dolch list that I sent home. Have your child think of a sentence with that word in it. Have your child write the sentence spelling the words as they hear the sound. Have them check for punctuation. Last, have them read their sentence out loud to you. Have your child read EVERY night out loud to an adult for at least 20 minutes. If you are CONSISTENT you will see GREAT result in 3 to 4 weeks!!!
- Conferences- Please be on time for your conference. We will be on a very tight schedule. I can NOT have conferences during instructional time. Thank you in advance for attending the conference. I like when we all work together for “OUR” child. It makes so much difference in their life. THANKS!!!!!!
- If you send money or forms to school please do the following:
- Write your child’s name on the envelope.
- Put all signed forms in the envelope.
- Write what the money is for on the envelope.

Beverly Westlake
My name is Beverly Westlake. I am so very excited that I will get to be your first grade teacher this year!!! I have a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I also have a Master’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This will be my 30th year at Fulbright and I have LOVED every minute of it!!! I am looking forward to a very exciting year!!!
Our classroom is room number 12 and it is known as “The Crayola Room”. It is the very last room downstairs in the building. Everything in our room is bright and colorful including YOU!!! I can’t wait to meet each and every one of you!!! PLEASE bring your smile with you!!!
We will be having fun every day on a new learning adventure. Everyday we will be reading, practicing handwriting skills, working on creative writing (where we will learn many new English skills), solving Math problems, and learning about Science and Social Studies skills. I can’t wait to get started!!!
